Injury withdrawals prevail as US Open approaches but Coco gets wild card
Injury pullouts prevail as the start of the US Open draws closer, with the kickoff in New York set for a week from Monday.
With seeds set to be determined withing days, the draw entry has been reduced with withdrawals from former champion Juan Martin del Potro and one-time local darling Cici Bellis.
The Argentine who won the 2009 title with a surprise defeat of Roger Federeris suffering through another knee injury after coming through a decade which included four wrist surgeries
The 30-year-old South American last played a match in the Queen’s Club first round and was forced to forfeit his next contest due to his injury.
The 20-year-old Bellis, who reached the third round at the major at Flushing Meadows in 2016, is out with an elbow problems.
She has not played a WTA-level match since Miami in March, 2018.
But the upcoming US women’s generation has not been overlooked , with 15-year-old Coco Gauff receiving a wild card entry.
The teenager booked into the Wimbledon fourth round and began the grass fortnight by defeating Venus Williams.
Also into the draw through wild cards are Australians Samantha Stosur and oft-injured Thanasi Kokknakis.
