Race to Londons Nitto ATP Finals Hots Up
With just over a month to go before the ATPs biggest event of the year, the race to qualify for the Tour finals is getting really exciting.
5 players have already qualified, with Nadal, Djokovic and Federer all comfortably through. US Open Runner Up Daniil Medvedev has also qualified after a superb run of results between July and September, as is world number 5 Dominic Thiem after winning the China Open in Beijing.
Stefanos Tsitsipas looks like he will grab the 6th spot after reaching the final of the China Open, and being 1000 points ahead of the next group of players.
The final 2 spots however are all still to play for. Bautista Agut and Zverev currently occupy 7th and 8th on the list, but with only 300 points separating 7th and 13th, a good run could see anyone qualify. Those just outside the top 8 currently include Goffin, Berrettini, Nishikori, Monfils and finally Fognini at 13th.
It seems unlikely for Nishikori to qualify unfortunately, with the Japanese player missing Shanghai with injury, he will need to make up for it in one of the remains tournaments. Shanghai is one of 2 ATP 1000 events left in the calendar, so is a crucial event for these players. Paris is the last one, with an ATP 250 and ATP 500 available to play in between.
In 2018, only 4 players had qualified by this point in the year, with eventual winner Zverev qualifying after getting to the semi-finals of Shanghai. The final 4 players to qualify, after withdrawals from Nadal and del Potro due to injury, all qualified after the conclusion of the Paris Masters, and it appears it will again go down to the wire for at least 2 spots.
