Thiem secures year-end London spot with Beijing win
Dominic Thiem’s Beijing finals spot has guaranteed the Austrian a place in the ATP Finals next month for the fourth year in a row.
The two-time Roland Garros finalist assured his November 10 trip to London as he beat Karen Khachanov in their semi-final on Saturday 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.
The 26-year-old joins Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and US Open runner up Daniil Medvedev in the season-wrap up showpiece.
Thiem’s four-year run at the year-ender matches that achieved by compatriot Thomas Muster (1990, 1995-1997).
“For me personally, it was one big goal when I started the season,” Thiem said after his Beijing victory.
“I’m very, very happy that I made it again. But it’s not because of today’s win, it’s because of all the season.
“It’s a big honour for me to again be a part of this big event in London. It also shows that I’ve played another very good and consistent season. I’m looking forward to it a lot.”
Thiem has enjoyed a solid season, with titles at Indian Wells, Barcelona and on his home clay at Kitzbuehel.
Next in the queue for London qualification is Stefanos Tsitsipas, trailed by Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut and holder Alexander Zverev.
